DU Title: Basic Electrical Circuits (BEC)
Subject: Charging and Starting Systems (CSS)
Course/Level: 1st
/ Vehicle Electromechanics
The
aim of this didactic unit is that students raise the ability to design,
calculate, assemble and interpret basic electrical circuits with different
components, analyze the variation of the fundamental parameters and bring
students closer to the practical interpretation of circuit theory based on the
reality that they know or are familiar to them.
Learning outcomes / Evaluation criteria:
To
apply electricity and electromagnetism laws and rules to basic electrical
circuits.
To
Calculate fundamental parameters of basic electrical circuits.
To assemble / disassemble basic electrical and
electronic circuits.
Subject Content:
Basic
parameters of electricity.
Electrical
parameters measurement units.
Ohm´s law
(formula).
Electric
power formula.
Series
circuits / Parallel circuits.
Basic components of electrical circuits: Sources,
batteries, cables, resistances, capacitors, light bulbs, motors, fuses,
switches, multimeter, voltmeter, ammeter.
6. Activities:
1) Reading Comprehension:
Read the following explanation of AC / DC. Afterwards, match sentences A-F with
sentences 1-6.
2) Vocabulary activity:
Would you be able to solve this wordsearch?
3) Listening activity Watch
this Video related to AC/DC. Listen twice, then fill the gaps.
4) Speaking and Writing
activity: In groups of 4 students: Discuss about the advantages, disadvantages
and applications of direct current and alternating current, watched on the
previous video.
5) Reading comprehension:
Read the text about Ohm´s law & power measurements.
6) Reading comprehension:
Enter your "Pinterest" account and search for the link bellow. Open
the document clicking on evatnoh23.wordpress.com. Have a look to the
document and match the expressions
7) Useful resources Use
these formulas to calculate
8) Useful resource Use this
App to calculate
9) Calculation exercises: In
the following circuits, calculate the current flowing through each of the
resistors, as well as the power they consume. Apply Ohm´s law and electric
power formulas Pie Chart.
10) Simulation exercises:
From the circuits of the previous exercise, use "Falstad" App to
design them and simulate their operation.
11) Listening activity:
Watch this Video related to "Ohm´s law experiments"
11) Speaking and Writing
activity: In groups of 4 students: Discuss about things you´ve learnt from the
previous video and write a summary of the experiments performed on the video.
12) Comprehension
activity: Practice how to identify a resistor value according to its color code
Final Task:
13) Collaborative work in
electrical workshop: In groups of 4 students, assemble a vehicle headlights
power circuit with switching off / parking light / dipped beam light / main
beam light.
14) Collaborative work
in electrical workshop: Taking in account the previous activity work, create a
SLIDETALK presentation explaining your work step by step.
Methodology.
Eminently practical application of electrical fundamental laws to calculate, design and
assemble vehicle electrical circuits.
Carrying out activities and tasks in electrical workshop collaboratively in groups or couples, where the suitability of the solutions adopted is discussed.
